Sail the world-famous Amalfi coast and retrace the golden era of Hollywood
So much has been written about it, so many famous names have visited the area, that the very name itself has become synonymous with glamour, romance and style; indeed it’s simply one of the most evocative words in travel: ‘Amalfi’.
Stars of the silver-screen such as Elizabeth Taylor, Humprey Bogart and Grace Kelly came for the glamour, but the sheer natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast is what continues to draw in the modern-day Hollywood royalty. Impossible pastel houses clinging to vertiginous cliffs, secluded coves and crystal clear seas – this famed region of Italy is like a dream, and it’s not too difficult to work out why the Amalfi Coast attracts the biggest superyachts every summer.
The Amalfi Coast is well known for its seafood, and the best way to enjoy this bounty is to eat as close to the ocean as possible. The laid-back fishing village of Conca dei Marini has a secluded beach set amid cliffs, and the Ristorante Risorgimento is right at the waters edge. There is no way to drive here and visitors must climb down exhaustingly-steep steps from the road; much better to get dropped off by tender and arrive in style.
A little further along the coast, Positano is perhaps the most beautiful town of the region, and possibly one of the best of anywhere else within Italy. Arranged around a beach of soft, volcanic sand it’s a wonderful combination of elegant resort and relaxed beach town; the perfect place to kick-back by the beach and spend a lazy day spotting celebrity yachts and their guests.
After a relaxed lunch, head inland to a real pearl of this coast and to the town of Ravello; it’s cobbled lanes and hidden gardens looking more like a film set than a real destination. This small town of only 2500 residents offers such privacy that it once attracted famous recluse, Greta Garbo. Today, Ravello is a popular destination wedding site for rock stars and Hollywood celebrities seeking refuge.
With some of the best parties of the summer and VIP lists worthy of a Hollywood premiere, the Amalfi Coast is an unsurpassed destination to explore by yacht. Take just a moment to make your dream vacation a reality.
